- 1801: Graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire

- 1807: Moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire
- March 4, 1813-March 3, 1817: Elected as a Federalist from New Hampshire to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congress
- 1816-1819: Achieved national fame as counsel representing Dartmouth College before the United States Supreme Court in the Dartmouth Case of 1816-1819
- 1820-1821: Delegate to the Massachusetts State Constitutional Convention
- June 8, 1827: Elected to the United States Senate, reelected as a Whig in 1833 and again in 1939
- 1841-1843: Appointed Secretary of State by President William Henry Harrison and again by President John Tyler
- 1842: Directly involved in dispute with Great Britain over Maine-Canada border with successful negotiations in what is known as the Webster-Ashburton Treaty
- March 4, 1845-July 22, 1850: Elected as a Whig to the United States Senate
- March 7, 1850: Supported the Compromise of 1850 denouncing Southern threats of secession, urging Northern support for a stronger law for recovery of fugitive slaves
- July 22, 1850: Appointed Secretary of State by President Millard Fillmore and served in this position until his death
- First Marriage: May 29, 1808 to Grace Fletcher (Clergyman's daughter), in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
