PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN
March 6, 1831 August 5, 1888
- Birthplace: Albany, New York
- Parents: John Sheridan and Mary Meenagh
- Youth: Moved to Somerset, Ohio, worked on canals and roads
- 1848 - 1853: Attended U.S. Military Academy, graduated number 34 of 49
- 1861: Quartermaster and commissary of Union troops in Southwest Missouri
- 1863: Commanded XX Corps, Army of the Cumberland during battle of Chickamauga, winning major battles for the Union
- 1864: Promoted to lieutenant-general, given command of all the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac (three divisions containing about 10,000 men)
- 1864: Placed in command of the Army of the Shenandoah by General Grant
- 1865: Forced Confederates to evacuate Petersburg, blocked the Confederate escape route at Appomattox Court House, forcing General Lee to surrender
- 1870: Served as American military observer with the Prussian Army during the Franco-Prussian War, meeting Bismarck and the German emperor
- Date and Place of Marriage: To Irene Rucker (daughter of Gen. D.H. Rucker), on June 3, 1875 while stationed in Chicago, Illinois
- Children: Three daughters and a son
- Age at Death: 57 years
- Place of Death: Nonquitt, Massachusetts
- Burial place: National Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia
