JOSEPH KING FENNO MANSFIELD
December 22, 1803 September 18, 1862
- Birthplace: New Haven, Connecticut
- Parents: Henry Mansfield and Mary Fenno
- Marriage: September 25, 1838 to Louisa Maria Mather
- Children: Two daughters and two sons
- 1817: Became a cadet at the United States Military Academy, West Point
- 1822: Graduated second in his class, commissioned second lieutenant and was assigned to the Corps of Engineers, primarily involved with construction of coastal defenses along the South Atlantic states
- 1832: Promoted to first lieutenant and later, to captain in 1838
- Mexican War: Chief Engineer of the Army under General Taylor
- After Mexican War: Continued involved with construction of coastal defenses
- 1853: Recommended by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis to receive an unsolicited promotion to coloneel and inspector-general of the army, traveling to Texas, New Mexico, California, and Oregon to inspect frontier posts
- April 28, 1861: Commissioned brigadier-general in the Regular Army and assigned to the command of the Department of Washington, guarding the Union's capital and surrounding territory from Confederate attack
- 1862: Involved in the occupation of Norfolk and Suffolk, Virginia
- Age at Death: 59 years
- Place of Death: Antietam battlefield (Sharpsburg, Maryland)
- Burial Place: Indian Hill Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut
