  • Entered United States Military Academy in 1836
  • Graduated from U.S. Military Academy as number 12 in a class of 42
  • Received commission as second lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery
  • Received brevet rank of first lieutenant for gallentry in the Florida War
  • Promoted to first lieutenant in 1844
  • Returned to West Point as an instructor in artillery and cavalary (1851-1854)
  • Promoted to brigadier-general of volunteers on August 17, 1861
  • Promoted to brigadier-general in the regular army on October 27, 1863
  • Age at death: 54 years
  • Place of death: San Francisco, California
  • Burial place: Troy, New York
