This $100 Legal Tender Note, Series 1880, with large Round Red Treasury Seal, was printed by the American Bank Note Co., New York City. On the left, in an oval frame, is the portrait of Abraham Lincoln, engraved by Charles Burt, from a photograph taken by Anthony Berger in Mathew Brady's studio on February 9th, 1864. To the far right is an allegorical scene titled "Reconstruction" (engraved by Louis Delnoce), with a standing goddess as an architect of postwar recovery, holding a carpenter's square on a block of stone. Seated nearby is a child holding a scroll illustrated with a domed pergola with a circle of 12 stars around a central object, perhaps a 13th star. While Lincoln is credited with planning the Reconstruction movement and bringing the Confederate States back into Union with the Northern States, he did not live long enough to see it happen. The true Reconstruction era began during President Andrew Johnson's administration.
