This $20 Compound Interest Treasury Note (Act of March 3, 1863) has Abraham Lincoln's portrait appearing on the far right side, issued while he was president. The portrait was engraved by Henry Gugler. To the far left is an allegorical scene titled "Victory." Located at the middle bottom is "Mortar Firing," engraved by James Smillie. Across the front of the note appears the words "Compound Interest Treasury Note," added after the notes were printed. Appearing in the central area on the reverse is an interesting 6% rate chart, listing the dollar amount gained by redeeming these notes after certain periods of time. Issued during the Civil War, these bank notes aided in raising money to finance the war.
